Grading Syllabus

Grading Syllabus

Wondering what your child (or you) will be working on as they progress through the belts? Here's a look at our full grading structure.

We run two syllabuses. First Steps covers our youngest students as they build the foundations. Once a student moves into Junior, Teen or Adult classes, they follow the main Shotokan syllabus, all the way from white belt through to Black Belt and beyond.

First Steps Syllabus (Ages 3 to 6)

Our First Steps syllabus is designed around fun, structure, and small steps. Students move through nine coloured footprint levels, learning the basics of punching, blocking, kicking, and safe falling and rolling. Later levels introduce pad work, simple ground skills, and the beginnings of kata.

Shotokan Grading Syllabus (Junior, Teen & Adult)

Our main syllabus runs from 9th Kyu right through to Black Belt and beyond. Each grade builds on the last, moving from basic strikes and blocks through to kata, partner drills, sparring, and eventually your own combinations and understanding of the art.

Not sure where your child (or you) currently sit, or what's coming up next? Just ask your instructor. We're always happy to talk through progress and what to expect at the next grading.
